Song of the Day: "Get Well" by Donna Missal

  • OLDER POST
  • NEWER POST

"Get Well" by Donna Missal is such a pretty pop torch song. And the relationship biz being discussed in this song is real. Been there and stayed the night.

The internet tells me Donna Missal is a singer/songwriter from New Jersey. Her site tells me she was homeschooled.

I'm bad at glibly naming genres, but I'd guess I'd call this low-key electro-pop. Ms. Missal's voice has an appealing combination of Fiona Apple smokiness and Halsey smoothness. Meanwhile, the lyrics are confessional a la Ani Difranco in songs like "You Had Time."

As usual, I came across this song on the music-sharing site letsloop.com. As I edge toward middle age, it helps me stay up with new music and also come across the old stuff I somehow missed.

Song of the Day: "Foreign Tides" by RY X

"Foreign Tides" by RY X is a great song I'm into at the moment, meaning I just discovered it on the LetsLoop music-sharing site.
It's like the Silversun Pickups crossed with the Police. Of course, making 'educated generalizations" like that makes me sound as pretentious as I am.
Also, I'm not even confident in their accuracy. I think you need as least three band coordinates to make the old "crossed with" work.
Like I might say the Killers sound like a mix of The Smiths plus Dire Straits plus the Neon Trees plus Queen plus Thin Lizzy plus the Strokes in their more disco-esque moments— but only after you add spiked Dr. Pepper to the concoction.  Pretentious but you get an idea.

"Foreign Tides" is a little brooding for a weekday, but still I think this song is worth a share.

Song of the Day: "Leaning On Myself" by Anna of the North

"Leaning on Myself" by Anna of the North is both other-wordly and cool. What a great single!

According to Wikipedia, Anna of the North is a stage name for Anna Lotterud, a singer-songwriter of the electro-pop ilk who is based in Oslo, Norway. From my US vantage, that is pretty northerly.

Song of the Day: "Water/Sand" by I Like Trains

There is a pleasant Joy Division, Interpol-like hollow despair to this baritone singer's vocals. It's great for introspection. My song of the day is "Water/Sand" by I Like Trains. The band has an amusing slogan, "Miserable since 2004." This song is from 2012.

Wikipedia, the college I currently attend, says I Like Trains is an alternative/post-punk rock band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
