My first memory is of being very small, with strange people towering over me whom, it was indicated, were my relatives. I was then taken outdoors on an adventure—to see a monster.
Looking back, I must have been in Redding, meeting my grandmother and grandfather and aunts and uncles for the first time in my memory. My grandparents lived on a ranch and the monster was an oversized pig.
