Song of the Day: "Dark Spring" by Beach House

"Dark Spring" by Beach House offers a compelling dreamscape, as befitting dreampop musicians. The indie group is actually a duo, keyboardist and vocalist Victoria Legrand, and guitarist, keyboardist and back vocalist Alex Scally.

Wikipedia tells me they are an indie outfit from Baltimore, Maryland and that they formed in 2004. That's some sonic longevity.

Random Musing: On loving Mr. Rogers

I like the last part of this quote. Here and now. I think that's the hardest part—loving each other when we're at our worst.
On another, arguably less profound, note, am I the only person who thinks Mr. Rogers should be considered more of a fashion icon?
Those immaculate sneakers. Nice fitting slacks over a slim form. A cardigan that says, "I'm in too informal a situation to wear a blazer but my outfit needs some interest. And, bye the bye, I don't care if you think my button-down sweater is lacking in machismo. I'm going to be cozy and make everyone feel cozy, because that's what I'm all about, here and now."
Okay, now I'm hearing Mr. Rogers in my head. It happens more often than you'd think.

Writing Post of the Day: 'You know you're a writer when. . .'

Writing post of the day: "When the scissors glide"

I'm currently at the point in the writing process (screenplay) where I feel like it's too hard, I'll never have another good idea and what I've done already is terrible. I am excoriating myself, saying, "You're not a writer."

Don't worry. If you're a writer—or anyone trying to achieve anything—this stage is perfectly normal. It's not a good one, though.

So what do I need to do now? Just build the story. Time to be a stone mason, not a sculptor. It doesn't have to be genius, it just has to be complete and make sense.

And as I move from self-loathing to pragmatism, I look forward to the next phase where I move from pragmatism to optimism.

More than anything, I look forward to those times when I feel, for a moment, that I'm a genius and my story is great and I'm at the finish line. It's like that glorious moment when you're cutting paper and the scissors begin to glide.

(Sorry about the wrong word usage on the meme, your for your. You see, writers do that too. Copyedit memes and internet posts. Every time.)

Song of the Day: "Sugar and Spice" by Hatch

"Sugar and Spice" by Hatchie is song of the day on Battlestar Eclectica. This tune, which I discovered on letsloop today, is sweet and pretty without being cloying, which is quite an achievement. It's such refreshing music, a palate cleanser after what has been a shitty news year, regardless of party affiliation or lack thereof. It reminds me to enjoin myself: "Sarah, consume less news and enjoy more music!"

Hatchie is actually one chick, kind of like Foster the People is mostly comprised of Mark Foster. It's the moniker that Harriette Pilbeam, a singer-songwriter from Brisbane, Australia, goes by. I'm pleased to make her musical acquaintance. The genre, the internet tells me, is shoegaze or dream pop which, as a certified daydream believer is right in my wheelhouse.

Song of the Day: "Ages Ago" by Forth Wanderers

                                                                           >>next song

I like the melodic but slightly off-kilter vocals and the jangly, wandering guitars of "Ages Ago" by Forth Wanderers. The New Jersey band is signed to Subpop Records and is a group to watch.

According tot their Bandcamp site, guitarist and songwriter Ben Guteri and vocalist Ava Trilling (good last name for a singer!) live in Ohio and New York, respectively, and pass their contributions back and forth a la the Postal Service. Staying apart is one way to keep a band together.
