"A little bit of this. A little bit of that. A pot, a pan, a broom, a hat. . ."—Anatevka, "Fiddler on the Roof." This is a blog about everything and nothing. A little parenting, a little humor, some poetry, news, essays, a lot of music. I don't want to waste your time, just send positive vibes into the blogosphere. Oh, yeah, my name is Sarah Torribio. Enough about me, how are you?

Etsy Shopping Find of the Day. . .
I am obsessed with these little houses, equipped with battery-operated lights making them into night lights, available on the WoodULikeToo shop on Etsy.
They are made by this very artistic looking guy named Dima Pokrovsky in Zaporizhia, Ukraine and available to folks like us through the wonders of the Internet. I love the primary colors.

The houses, hand created after various styles—"Spanish house," "Dutch house," "Vratislavia house" cost from $43 to $49 each.
I can imagine using one or more of these to decorate a funky kitchen—not to be confused with a funky chicken—or a mantle, year-round.
Or you could bring them out—a whole little eclectic city—Christmas, draped in cotton-batting snow.

Song of the Day: "Scrubs" by TLC
"Scrubs" by TLC will forever and always be a fabulous sing-along song. ("A scrub is a guy who thinks he's fine/He's also known as a buster. . .")
I'm ready to learn the rap. Happy Monday! Oh, wait, yesterday was labor day and no work so I'm discombobulated. Happy Tuesday!

Date night. . .
I saw the latest "Star Trek" movie yesterday. I'll admit the plot was a touch fast-moving for my plodding ways but I love the reboot because the casting, acting and direction is so good. They do such a wonderful job paying homage to the original cast.
Karl Urban, in particular, does is masterful at playing Bones McCoy, with his wry interaction with Spock. He had me laughing out loud. And how gorgeous is actress Sofi Boutella that she looks hot while painted white with stripes and sporting a prosthetic alien forehead?
Thanks to Grandma Margaret Hall for babysitting. When we get an evening out, I'm like Mel Gibson in "Brave Heart" roaring, "Freeeeeeeeeee-dooooooooom!"

My latest electronic composition
It's called "Time and Space." It's more of an ambient piece than electronica.
When I first started making electronic music about a year ago, I told myself I wouldn't be critical but instead share all I make. I've got much more to learn, but I think some progress is happening.

Bite-Sized Autobiography: Grandma at the Barn
<< last bite
My beautiful maternal grandmother, Roberta "Bobby" McCarty. She was a wonderful person and passed on so many songs and rhymes to me.
"Gum-chewing girls and cud-chewing cows are alike in some ways and yet different somehow. Ah, yes, I see it all now. It's the intelligent look on the face of the cow."
I've taught the following nonsense rhyme to my son:
"One dark night when the sun was shining bright/Two dead boys set out to fight/Back-to-back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot one another/A deaf policeman heard the noise/And saved the lives of the two dead boys."
She had a very lilting, musical voice, loved telling stories and reporting on the doings of friends and family, was a voracious reader, including Dorothy Gilman's "Mrs. Polifax" mysteries, and was always talking about movies and things that "tickled" her.
My happiest times as a child were summers spent at the ranch she and my grandfather Clyde McCarty had in Redding, California.
Imagine being a suburban West Covina kid and suddenly hearing roosters crowing in the morning, feeding chickens and collecting eggs. They also had a big red barn, which you reached via a path lined by an avenue of trees, and always had horses, sheep and pigs.
It was very much an idyllic experience for me.
